Sports Day 1961 - Pole Vault & Socialising
Click thumbnail images to enlarge

These photographs are dated 1961 and were all taken in the jumping area next to the old gym (hut 46).  From the length of the shadows it was late afternoon, so it's possible that this was either (a) pre-sports day qualifier or (b) held late on the day itself.  It's difficult to remember the format after 40+ years!

Philip Bacon goes over with yards to spare.  The Gym and Cavell Hall are behind.  Is the PE Mistress Miss Buttress?

The man himself.

The 'bar' is triangular section aluminium - it was rare to see a perfectly straight one, given that many of us started to descend before getting over the top!  It's worth noting that in those days there was only a sand pit to land on - at ground level.

Paul D. Clarke and Margaret Stokes (?).  It could be Graham D. Smith in 'chat up' mode at the back.

Terry Flood at centre, but who are the others?

Terry Flood and ?

? and Timothy Doe.  Hut 23 at left, old Gym at right and Cavell Hall in the background.
